In Little Horse’s lush meadow, even the wind and rocks are alive. As he ventures from his mother’s side to explore the world into which he was born, he discovers the joy of jumping. He decides to become a unicorn when he grows up. Then no obstacle will be too big for him. He’ll leap, spread his wings, and fly over even the greatet mountain.
During a stampede triggered by a cougar attack, Little Horse is separated from his herd. He wanders the forest, alone and forlorn, until a bear trap springs up from the forest floor, bites his leg, and won’t let go. A young equestrian finds and frees him. With her eyes the color of the sea and laughter like a bubbling brook, Little Horse thinks she is a mermaid. He falls head-over-hooves in love.
He accompanies Mermaid to her stable, but the confinement of being cooped up and her grueling jumping lessons prhoneymoon to an end. In deciding whether to flee to search for his true calling, Little Horse grapples with questions about the meaning of life and his purpose.
